Polar Race Banner

Polar Race Expedition Sponsors

Polar Adventures would like to thank all our suppliers for their help in providing equipment and support for the Polar Race.

In particular, we give special thanks to the following companies for their time and generosity.
1000 Mile

1000 Mile

1000 Mile have provided all competitors in the Polar Race with their "1000 Mile Ultimate Tactel Liner" socks.

Believe it or not, the 1000 Mile sock was initially developed as a medical aid for sufferers from poor circulation and foot associated problems. But nowadays it's used by world class athletes as a means of preventing blistering and controlling perspiration.

As a base layer under a thicker walking sock, these unique double layer liners provide for an ideal arctic walking experience.
Baffin

Baffin

As their name suggests, Baffin Footwear Technology design state-of-the-art, high-performance footwear for extreme conditions.

Baffin have kitted out our racers with their specially developed boots, designed for durability, heat conservation, and moisture management. Oh, and not forgetting comfort too!

Buffera

Buffera are the makers of Buff®Wear 'multifunctional' headwear. Manufactured from technical microfiber, Buff®Wear is wind-resistant, breathable, and wicks perspiration. The 'stitch-free' process makes Buff®Wear extremely comfortable and ideal for arctic conditions.
Data Connection

Data Connection is one of the world's leading communications technology companies, with a unique ability to deliver innovative software and hardware products spanning traditional and next generation IT networks.

Data Connection are providing IT support facilities prior to and during the Polar Race.
First Air

First Air

Racing to the North Pole is hard, but it's no mean feat even getting to the starting line!

First Air are one of the few airlines equipped to fly a full contingent of contestants, organisers, and all their kit from the metropolis of Ottawa to the small town of Resolute Bay, a distance in itself of over 2000 miles.
First Choice Expedition Foods

First Choice Expedition Foods

First Choice Expedition Foods are the selected food supplier for the Polar Race. They will be providing the high energy food packs distributed to all competitors during the race.

The food is specially developed to be highly nutritious yet light and easy to prepare. To the great delight of our racers it's surprisingly tasty too!

Our racers will require about three times their normal calorie intake every day, but will want to spend as little time and energy preparing it as possible. The food packs supplied by First Choice Expedition Foods are ideal to meet these conflicting demands.
Fischer

Fischer

Fischer are providing the Nordic skis our teams will be using to race across the Arctic ice plains.

Fischer are renowned for kitting out the fastest skiers in the world. Although possibly not skiing quite as fast as Fischer's top athletes, our racers will be glad to know they've got the best that money can buy on their feet.
Hare and Hounds Hotel

Hare & Hounds Hotel, Westonbirt

The Hare & Hounds Hotel in Westonbirt, near Tetbury, Gloucestershire has been the location for several Polar Race events.

The staff have provided great hospitality to organisers and racers alike. And didn't bat an eyelid when tents were erected en-masse in their conference room!
Inukshuk Solutions

Inukshuk Solutions

Inukshuk Solutions provides consultancy to organisations and offers a wide range of services, including expedition and event logistics.

They are partnering with Polar Adventures to provide many of the organisational, logistical and training functions for the Polar Race.
Lord Elgin Hotel

Lord Elgin Hotel, Ottawa

The Lord Elgin Hotel is an Ottawa landmark.

It is providing the last vestiges of luxury for our racers before departing to Resolute Bay, and the first on their return.
Mountain Hardwear

Mountain Hardwear

To keep the Polar Race Checkpoint Team warm and cosy for long periods of time in the bitter arctic conditions, a tent is needed that's roomy yet stable, something built to handle extended use in the harshest of environments. It has to be adaptable to double as a doctor's surgery or emergency team shelter, and so something out of the ordinary is called for.

Many thanks to our friends at Mountain Hardware for coming up with the answer. They have offered to provide us with a tent that fulfills all of our Checkpoint Team's conflicting needs.
Rab

Rab

Rab are the world leaders in extreme cold weather clothing, with their logo often seen adorning the jackets of mountain summiteers and polar explorers. So it's no surprise that Rab were chosen as suppliers for the Polar Race.

Each racer has received an "Andes" down jacket from Rab's Extreme range together with windcheater clothing to help keep them warm in the -40°C Arctic conditions. And as with all the equipment supplied to our racers, it's theirs to keep after the Race.

Riemann P20

P20 sun cream protected our racers (and our organisers!) during Polar Race 2003. It will be doing the same again in 2005.
Snowsled

Snowsled

Snowsled are a leading supplier of pulks and sleds to the expedition industry.

Snowsled are supplying all the pulks, together with their harnesses and bindings, which racers will be pulling over the ice, for 400 miles, to transport their food, clothing, tents and other equipment.
South Camp Inn

South Camp Inn, Resolute Bay

The South Camp Inn at Resolute Bay will be Polar Race HQ during April 2005, providing accommodation to all organisers and racers (except, of course, when they're camping out on the ice!)

As well as accommodation, the South Camp Inn provides a communications hub from which the Polar Race organisers can contact racers and the rest of the world, by satellite phone, telephone and the internet.

The South Camp Inn proved to be the 'best place place in town' for Polar Race 2003, and we're looking forward to going back in 2005.
Swiss One

Swiss One

Swiss One are providing sunglasses and goggles for the teams. Swiss One are a leading supplier to the expedition industry.
Terra Nova

Terra Nova

Terra Nova are one of the leading UK suppliers for outdoor equipment, encompassing the brand names of Extremities, Wild Country as well as Terra Nova itself.

It's tents for which we've turned to Terra Nova, as they have a range of specially designed, high endurance, no compromise tents that are proven in extreme polar conditions.

It is these tents that our teams will be calling "home" for four weeks, relying on them for protection in the harsh arctic environment.
Taunton Leisure

Taunton Leisure

Taunton Leisure has been specialising in outdoor products for over 25 years. They are one of the thoroughbreds in the outdoor equipment market.

This background together with their wide range of products is the reason that Polar Adventures have turned to them to supply much of the kit being used by contestants and organisers in the Polar Race, encompassing everything from clothing to cooking utensils.

As such, they are one of the major suppliers to the event, and provide an invaluable partnership for which Polar Adventures is extremely grateful.
Wedgwood

Wedgwood

Wedgwood have provided the 'Wedgwood Blue Ice' trophy to be presented to the winning team. The trophy has been uniquely designed to reflect the challenges set by the Polar Race.
